Scandals in football
When looking at the ethics (or lack of) in football, it is easy to see that the majority of these issues have sparked their fair share of controversies and scandals over the years. Below are the most outrageous scandals that engulfed the footballing world!
1. John Terry v Anton Ferdinand
The infamous incident at Loftus Road in 2011, which ultimatley led to John Terry retiring from international football and being banned for four games and fined £220,000. John Terry allegedly called Anton Ferdinand a "f*****g black c***" in the 85th minute of the very heated West London derby between Chelsea and QPR. The Metropolitan Police received an anonymous complaint from the public the following day and the rest, as they say, is history.
2. Luis Suárez v Patrice Evra
2011 was not shy of controversy as Luis Suárez was found guilty of racially abusing Patrice Evra at least ten times in a match at Anfield between Liverpool and Manchester United in October. Suárez was fined £40,000 and banned for eight matches after being found guilty by The FA.
3. 2006 Italian football scandal
Italian football's reputation was severely damaged in 2006 when top Serie A and Serie B football clubs such as Juventus, AC Milan, Fiorentina and Reggina were found to be involved in the rigging of their football games. Telephone interceptors showed a number of team managers and referee organisations to be in contact where teams would influence which referees would be in charge of their football matches. League champions at the time Juventus were relegated to Serie B and stripped of their 2005 and 2006 Serie A titles.
4. Luis Suárez v Branislav Ivanovic
Luis Suarez was engulfed in his second scandal since moving to Liverpool FC when he was caught biting Branislav Ivanovic in a match between Liverpool and Chelsea at Anfield in April 2013. Suárez was banned for ten matches and charged with violent conduct by The FA.
5. Andy Gray and Richard Keys sexism storm
The Sky Sports presenters lost their jobs and their reputations left in tatters after this sexism scandal in 2011. The pair were secretly recorded making comments about assistant referee Sian Massey, demonstrating offensive behaviour towards fellow presenter Charlotte Jackson and making crude comments during a conversation with Jamie Redknapp. More footage in 2014 has shown the pair making sexist remarks towards fellow Sky Sports reporter at the time Clare Tomlinson.
