Footballers as role models
Barnet FC Footballer, Keanu Marsh-Brown on footballers as role models
Footballers are known for their fast paced lifestyles fueled by money, women and fast cars. So are they good role models for the millions of children that watch them every weekend across Britain?
Not all footballers are angels, getting caught up in various scandals over the years. Most recently the unethical behaviour of players gambling on matches involving themselves has become public knowledge, damaging several footballers reputations and careers.
But still millions of children across Britain will grow up watching their favourite players hoping one day they will emulate them.
Does Scott Field, Head of Media Relations at the Football Association think footballers are good role models? “Absolutely yes. I think that in the great majority of instances players have this at the forefront of their minds and look to act responsibly. We live in an age with the 24 hour media glare and the spotlight is on high profile individual’s all the time and I think in the great majority of instances players do act responsibly and they also do a lot of good in their communities. Not only in the football clubs, which they play for, but also the charitable work that they support and the communities they exist in, in the wider sense.
“Are they role models? Yes. Should they ever lose sight that they are role models? No. I think it’s really important that players set a good positive tone and example.”
